Veneer

The most popular audio cabinet veneer is Black American Walnut, and is stocked in 4 x 8 foot sheets. This is a high quality book matched veneer with lots of figure and unique grain. It is sure to please everyone.

As an upgrade, I stock American Burl Walnut, this is bought in small quantities of 6 to 20 pieces, sheet sizes average 16 by 21 inches, so each group will be different. The veneer is delivered raw, which means no 10mil paper backer. This is much more difficult to apply, but is absolutely beautiful and will have deep grain patterns. Occasionally it is not possible to match exactly the sides to top grain, but is hardly noticed.

Available veneers with generally no order wait time are: cherry, maple, red oak, pecan, American walnut, mahogany, teak, flaky oak. I use only 10 mil paper backed veneer, if doing a special order and it is not paper backed, it is most likely a raw veneer, and is not laying flat, please consult with me. Special ordering of veneers is available, for your next project. Please remember, some unusual or exotic veneers may require larger deposit or longer wait times.

Finishing

Finishing is normally done with China Tung oil purchased as 100% and thinned as necessary. Tung oil is a deep rich honey color and this helps impart a beautiful wet wood look and really brings out the grain. Normally 2 Tung oil coats is applied, taking 4 days to dry. Then finished with a final 3 coats of high grade furniture poly acrylic or polyurethane in satin finish. Note all Tung oil and poly coats are hand applied, there never is any brushing or spray. This will give an even finish, with no globs, etc. Buyer can polish or wax cabinet as desired.

Optional finishes are generally a top coat to match your needs, a matte, satin, or gloss can be ordered. Most audio cabinets are satin style. Some of the newer pieces from the 70's and early eighties used a high gloss finish, similar to Pioneer side panels on their Elite series.

If buyer wants a specific brand, it can be ordered or buyer can send it to me. Staining of wood is generally not necessary and I use no stains in most cabinet work. Some exceptionally light woods, will need a stain - cherry, oak, etc. Additionally, I will sell a cabinet with no finish, and you can finish it your self.

I recommend looking around on internet for the reason and benefits of Tung oil vs. Danish oil, linseed oil, etc, and you will be very pleased with its properties of sealing wood fibers and giving the beautiful wet grain wood look and not having to worry about the finish darkening over the years or yellowing.
